Richard Leroy is an unassuming winemaker who makes some of the most complex and appealing Chenins I have ever tasted. The domaine is divided into two distinct parcels, both planted with Chenin Blanc. The Clos des Rouliers is a .7 hectare parcel in the first part of Côteaux de Anjou, with soil that consists mostly of sandy shale, south facing vineyard of 25 year old vines. Noëls de Montbenault is a 2 hectare parcel within the appellation Côteaux du Layon Faye de Anjou, situated on the top of the hill with superb exposure. The soil is volcanic, composed of rhyolites and spilites. The vines are 50 years old. Both vineyards are tilled; no weeding nor insecticides. The vine treatments are made up only of sulphur, pulp of Bordeaux and biodynamic preparations (certification Ecocert). The vineyard yield between 1996 to 2015 ranged between 7 and 30 Hl/Ha. Bottling occurs one year after the vintage with no chapitalisation.
