About the Producer
Kusuda is one of the most extraordinary small-producer estates in the world of wine, the life's work of Hiroyuki "Hiro" Kusuda, a Tokyo-born former lawyer who trained at Geisenheim University in Germany before emigrating to Martinborough, New Zealand, in 2001, inspired by a single transcendent bottle of 1992 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir. Farming just 3.8 hectares of vines entirely by hand, with meticulous berry-by-berry sorting that can take three days per grape-picking day, Hiro produces tiny quantities of Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Syrah of astonishing purity, finesse, and longevity, bottled unfined and unfiltered. His wines have earned a global cult following, particularly in Japan, and have been described by critics as among the finest Pinot Noirs made outside Burgundy. An almost impossibly rare and precious address for serious collectors.
